LESSONS FROM OLYMPIANS
Lessons from Olympic and World Cup Skiers Phil & Steve Mahre
Having an opportunity to ski and learn from Olympic medalists and World Cup Champions Phil & Steve Mahre was the dream of a lifetime. The one take away I learned from Steve and Phil was don’t be afraid to think outside the box. Don’t be afraid to buck the norm. Try a new path to succeed.
Both Steve and Phil did this throughout their careers. Like choosing to cross train in other sports in the offseason while their fellow teammates and competitors chose to spend their summers training in the Southern Hemisphere. Choosing to defer from 11 months of core training. Instead, breaking from the norm, from the system, from the proven and choosing to purse the speed and line of their dirt bikes. A practice which provided them a mental cleansing from skiing and added a new source of speed, intensity, focus and the rush of challenge.
Key take away: To deliver excellent and sometimes record results, you often need to forge your own trail and test the bounds of your intuition.
